John Pendlebury exhibition-workshop
May’s exhibition and workshop on John Pendlebury and his contribution to Cretan archaeology and the Second World War was a great success. At the inauguration of the exhibition, addresses were delivered by the Political Counsellor of the British Embassy, Jaime Turner; the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis; the Mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokerinos; and the Director of the BSA, Rebecca Sweetman. GeraldCadogan gave the keynote lecture. These were followed by a tour of the exhibition given by the exhibition curators, and by a dinner. The inauguration was attended by the ecclesiastical and political authorities of Heraklion.
The workshop was also a resounding success; this was introduced by the Deputy Regional Governor for Culture, Georgia Milaki; the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Rena Papadaki-Skalidi; the Director of the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion, Dimitris Savvas; the Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, Vassiliki Sythiakaki; and the general Director of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Stella Chryssoulaki. Papers were given by eminent researchers of the Universities of Athens (Lefteris Platon) and Crete (Giannis Skalidakis and Giorgos Tzorakis), the BSA (Kostis Christakis and Amalia Kakisis), and the University of Amsterdam (Samantha Ximeri), and by Artemis Klitsi, Kostis Mamalakis and Imogen Grundon (whose paper was read by Rosemary Tzanaki). The success of the events is indicated by the high number of people in attendance, contributing to the School’s outreach profile. The event was supported by the Region of Crete with a grant of €17,000. The exhibition will remain open until August and will be accompanied by museum educational programmes.
