Abstract: John Wilkes and Susan Walker consider the British engagement with the idea of Sparta as an ancient city and the urban reality as revealed by excavation in the 1980s and 1990s of the Roman Stoa and Theatre on the south side of the Acropolis. Here the residents of Roman and Byzantine Sparta enjoyed experiences as diverse as a mechanical moving stage in the high-tech, late Hellenistic theatre to dining on turnips in the Byzantine houses built into the western end of the auditorium.
