Earth Water Fire, Celebrating Cretan Pottery from Antiquity to the Present
The Thrapsano Cultural Association is organising a series of cultural events centred on Cretan pottery, in collaboration with the British School at Athens (Knossos Research Centre) and the Centre for the Study of Modern Ceramics – G. Psaropoulos Foundation, co-organised by the Region of Crete with the participation of the Herakleion Ephorate of Antiquities and the potters of Thrapsano

THURSDAY 11-7-2019 (Village square)
20:00: Opening
20:30: Official speeches
20:30 – 21:30: Lecture: 9,000 Years of Cretan Pottery (Κ. Christakis, British School at Athens and N. Liaros, Ministry of Culture and Sports).
21:30 – 24:00: Music (traditional Cretan music with V. Vardakis and K. Avyssinos).
FRIDAY 12-7-2019
18:00 – 20:00: Educational programme by the potters Erianna Arvaniti, Anthi Theodorou and Thalassini Bratsou of the Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery. Stories next to the kiln, a treasure hunt and a pottery workshop for young and old will be held at the Potters’ Cooperative of Thrapsano (MINOS).
19:00 – 20:30: Tour of the Palace at Galatas Pediada (by G. Rethemiotakis, Ministry of Culture and Sports).
21:00 – 24:00: Entechno Greek music evening with the Nefala ensemble (village theatre).
SATURDAY 13-7-2019
18:00–19:30: Tour of the Byzantine Church of St Panteleimon, Bitzariano (by V. Sythiakaki, Director of the Heraklion Ephorate of Antiquities).
20:00–22:30: Exhibition of Photographs from the R. Hampe Archive (Presentation and tour by archaeologist and potter N. Liaros, Ministry of Culture and Sports).
The Thrapsano Vedema (itinerant potters): Conversations with the older inhabitants of Thrapsano, and showing of Vendema, a documentary by the Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery (Coordinator: N. Liaros).
The Diet of the itinerant potters – Cretan Diet (Pediada Province): Lecture by author and journalist N. Psilakis.
Τhe photograph exhibition and the other events on itinerant potters will take place at Thrapsano Primary School.
SUNDAY 14-7-2019: Thrapsano Primary School
18:00 – 20:00: Imprints and incisions on clay: Pottery workshops for young and old in the schoolyard, by the potters Erianna Arvaniti, Anthi Theodorou and Thalassini Bratsou of the Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery,
MINOAN TASTE: A meal inspired by the Minoan diet as reconstructed from archaeobotanical remains and organic analyses. Prepared for visitors by archaeologist Jerolyn Morrison using modern replicas of Minoan cooking vessels.
21:30-24:00: Erotokritos – Music of Crete and the Greek islands by violinist Giorgos Tsantakis.
Participation to all events is free. The Cultural Associations of Apostoloi and Voni and local village businesses will run stands during the cultural events. All the pottery workshops will be open to visitors during the events, while potters will present their work in picturesque corners of the village every afternoon except Thursday. A tour bus will leave from Thrapsano Primary School half an hour before each tour.
