Professor Lesley Brown (University of Oxford), “Self-sufficiency in Aristotle and others: what’s so good about Autarkeia?”
Abstract
Self-sufficiency – autarkeia – is a familiar Greek cultural value, and one of the hallmarks of the best life according to Aristotle. But what makes a life self-sufficient? I probe his claim that the life of philosophical reflection is most self-sufficient because it can be solitary.
This event is in partnership with the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens.
The lecture will take place in a hybrid format, with limited in-person attendance and via zoom link. Both will require registration and places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
