“We are delighted to announce that HRH The Prince of Wales has agreed to continue as Patron of the British School at Athens for a further 5 years. The BSA is proud to have enjoyed Royal Patronage since its foundation in 1886. The Prince of Wales succeeded HRH The Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, as Patron of the BSA in 1997. Our previous Patrons include King Edward VII who, as Prince of Wales, chaired the meeting that led to the foundation of the School, King George V and King George VI. His Royal Highness has visited the BSA on two occasions: in 1998 and earlier this year, when he was accompanied by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall during their first official joint visit to Greece.”    Dr Carol Bell, Chair of the Council of the BSA

The BSA is a UK registered charity whose mission is to conduct, promote and facilitate research on Greece across the humanities and social sciences as well as the creative arts. It fosters interdisciplinary approaches that span all periods, from the Palaeolithic to the present. The BSA maintains a central base in Athens and a satellite research centre at Knossos on Crete. Its Athens base comprises a world leading centre for science-based archaeology (the Marc and Ismene Fitch Laboratory), an extensive Library and Archive, and a hostel. The Knossos Research Centre, located on the former estate of Sir Arthur Evans, offers accommodation and library facilities and access to archaeological collections spanning over a century of research on Crete. The BSA offers research fellowships, courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students and for school teachers, as well as an annual Arts Bursary. As one of seven British International Research Institutes assisted by the British Academy, including the British School at Rome and the British Institute at Ankara, the BSA also operates an office in London.
