Prof. Thomas Gallant (University of California, San Diego), Historical and Contemporary Archaeology in Greece
Abstract: The fields of Historical Archaeology and Contemporary Archaeology are well-established globally, yet they have only recently begun to gain traction in the study of the Greek world. In this illustrated talk, Thomas Gallant assesses their state-of-play by examining recent publications in both fields. His central claim is that, though currently underdeveloped, Greece holds the potential to be an important site for historical and contemporary archaeological research. He develops this argument through an examination of a selection of cases studies dealing with the archaeology of Greece over the last five centuries. After describing the current situation including both positive and negative aspects, he suggests possible ways forward.
